Driving Around Milngavie
Milngavie is located about 6 miles North of Glasgow in the East Dunbartonshire council area, and like its neighbour Bearsden is very much a residential commuter town. With a population of around 13,000, Milngavie is well-known for a number of popular attractions such as the starting-off point of the West Highland Way, and Mugdock Country Park and Reservoir.
As a suburban commuter town, Milngavie has strong road links to Glasgow City Centre, primarily the very busy A81 Milngavie Road / Glasgow Road. Heading North out of Milngavie, Strathblane Road is also quite busy since it is a frequently used route to head out to Strathblane, Blanefield and towards Aberfoyle and Callander. Watch out for the fixed speed camera on Strathblane Road, especially if you have a tendency to increase your speed.
In addition to some very busy roads, Milngavie is popular for cyclists, meaning that you may need to take particular care of cycle lanes – in particular Main Street / Milngavie Road.
Milngavie has a large number of primary schools, including Milngavie Primary School, St Joseph’s Primary School, Baldernock Primary School, Clober Primary School, Craigdhu Primary School, and Atholl Preparatory School which is a part of The Glasgow Academy. It is also home to the Douglas Academy secondary school on Craigton Road. You must take particular care when approaching schools, as it is likely that young children may enter the road suddenly. For this reason schools are usually marked with specific traffic signals to reduce the speed limit to 20mph during peak hours, and with specific parking restrictions for a short distance either side of nearby road crossings to allow greater visibility.
Should you wish to practice your basic skills between lessons – including Turn in Road, Reverse Round Corner and Parallel Park manoeuvres – then Milngavie has a number of good spots to use including:
- Mains Estate
- Keystone Avenue
The nearest test centre for pupils learning to drive in Milngavie will be Anniesland Test Centre. All of our instructors are very familiar with the driving conditions in both Milngavie and Anniesland, and will be able to pass on hints and tips that will help you to succeed in your driving test when the time comes.
